Lovecraftian RPG Goodness

Delve into a world of darkness and madness in this official video game, inspired by the classic pen and paper RPG. Put on your investigating shoes.

Mind Bending

Call of Cthulhu is a horror RPG adventure game, placing you the world of Lovecraft with all the creepy horror that that entails. The game begins with the mandate to solve the mystery of the tragic death of a family, but soon devolves into otherworldly insanity as you progress. You must investigate clues to unravel the mystery, all the while trying not to let your sanity unravel with it. The developers chose to go with a slightly stylised art style, which works well; the graphics look almost realistic while still being stylised enough to not look like a failed attempt at realism. When you deal with characters, you have a number of tactics at your disposal, such as small talk, and intimidation, with more clue-based options opening up as you investigate relevant things.

A Bit Cliche

It almost seems unfair to say, seeing as the source material is the origin of these cliches, but much of the horror in this game feels stale and overused. Also, letting your sanity meter hit rock bottom causes death, which feels odd. Still, this is a good looking, solid horror RPG experience.

PROS

  • Nice art style
  • Faithful to source material

CONS

  • The horror can feel cliche
  • Letting sanity bar empty results in instant death
